"Soon after receiving this message? I set out for, the Paradise settlement on the Cascade slope, which I reached after several hours of hard walking-," said the missionary. "I was an , utter stranger in this region, and to get my bearings I called at the schoolbouse. The, room was filled with children of all ages, who seemed eager to hear everything I had ; to say to them. - ' '"No one could tell me the meaning sof . a tier, and but ' one ' or two had ever Heard of the resurrection, though several . saised their hands when I asked how rhany had heard of Jesus. , "After leaving : the schoolhouse I started out In earnest to make a thor ough canvass of the, settlement The people everywhere seemed surprised to see me. They told me I was the first Christian' worker who had ever visited that part of the country, though it has been settled for upward of 40 years. 0a every hand there was evidence of ftiuch strife and bitter feeling. One schoolhouse had already been burned to the ground and there were threats of gUH worse things to come." The missionary established a Sunday school at once in the community and Within a,few weeks held a series of spe cial meetings, as a result of which he reports, neighborhood peace has again been " established, and one young man left the community to study tor tne mm- bit nr. ; Under the direction of E.
